Last month I worked as Henry Cavills body double for the new Huawei P9 Commercial, showcasing their new partnership with famed camera maker Leica. The commercial was shot in Shanghai and I stayed with the cast and crew at the amazing Pu Li hotel for the duration of the shoot.
The whole experience was fantastic. The experienced crew were lovely and Director Baille Walsh was very warm and welcoming. We shot at four locations- A gigantic hotel suite which looked owned by a Bond Villan from Rodger Moore's days, a tightly packed urban market just on the precipice of being taken over by the vast skyscraper developments nearby, The Chinese communist centre, home to propaganda speeches by the party since the beginning of the century, and the entrance of the Jin Mao Tower, one of the tallest buildings in Shanghai, flanked by the Shanghai tower and the Shanghai world financial centre.
Work as a body double is simple really. the body double who has the same physical measurements as the star is used by the director to work out the action and blocking of the scene or shot, as well as standing in to work out lighting needed.
Shanghai itself was incredible. No other city ive visited compares to it in terms of sheer scale. It truely seems endless. When you add in the smog, which restricts visibility to about 1.5km, you get the sense you are in a Sci-Fi City like those in Blade Runner.
I'm very grateful to have been a part of this commercial, it was one of the funnest jobs Ive ever done and ill always remember my short stay in Shanghai. The best part was working with such talented and lovely cast and crew members. Its always great to learn from them and at the same time have a good time doing it!
I was recently part of a short called Videobox made by The University of Creative arts at Farnham. Videobox has a rather odd concept, An old school VHS rental store is struck by lighting, forcing the worlds of two of its movies (Lady by the Lake and Harrison Darkstar 2) to merge. The interaction between the period drama world of Lady by the lake and the B-movie Sci-Fi world of Harrison Darkstar is what Videobox is all about.
I play Harrison Darkstar, the hero of the B-movie Sci-Fi world of Harrison Darkstar 2. Of course there is a Sci-Fi super villain, and that is Zenobius. The two of us butting heads for eternity across the cosmos, good vs evil. Who is good and who evil is put into question with the arrival of Henrietta arrives from the world of Lady by the Lake.
We shot at two locations, a Large Manor house at The Vyne, Lakeside and in the studio at the University. It was a memorable shoot, all the cast and crew were great to work with and great company. There is a lot of talent flowing out of The University of Creative Arts and thats great to see. Many more great projects to come im sure.
The short film Batman: The Bloody Valentine has now been released! I star as Batman in this twisted tale of the Jokers surreal, obsessive and violent love affair with the Dark Knight. Directed by Harry and George Kirby from K&K productions, this was a great project to be a part of. Check out the article below from movie pilot:
And here is a blog post from photographer Anthony Hunt:
